J Coffey switch from noisy, heavy generators for Instagrid Portable Power

Building the UK's clean energy future: How J Coffey is using Instagrid to power cleaner construction from the ground up.

The Isle of Grain in Kent is not a name that makes headlines. But what is being built there will shape how clean energy moves across Europe for decades.

National Grid's Wallend 400 kV GIS Substation is one of the most significant pieces of electricity infrastructure under construction in the South East. Part of a multi billion pound programme to strengthen the UK transmission network, it will support NeuConnect, the 1.4 GW high-voltage direct current interconnector linking the UK and Germany for the first time. When operational, clean energy will flow in both directions between two of Europe's largest electricity markets.

J Coffey, one of the UK's leading civil engineering specialists, is delivering the extensive groundworks package.

This is nationally significant infrastructure. The team delivering it has chosen to make the build itself cleaner.

J Coffey switch noisy, heavy generators for Instagrid Portable Power

Replacing combustion generators on a working civils site

At Wallend, J Coffey have replaced traditional portable combustion generators with Instagrid portable power supply units. The impact, in their own words, has been transformative.

A traditional 5 kVA combustion generator can emit up to 10,800 tCO₂ annually. Instagrid delivers zero local emissions at the point of use.

The practical benefits compound quickly: no fuel deliveries, no refuelling logistics mid-shift, no exhaust fumes in the working environment, no generator noise across a densely active civils site, and fewer trailing cables reducing trip hazards for the team on the ground.

On a project working to tight environmental and safety standards, those are not marginal gains. They are the difference between meeting site commitments and missing them.

On the tools, on the move: powering a large, active site

Across the vast site Instagrid units are handling a wide range of demanding applications: lighting, pumps for dewatering, groundwork tools to name a few.

The ability to move with the team is a recurring theme. Where even a small combustion generator needs a machine to shift across a vast, muddy site, Instagrid units move by hand. That makes the site safer, keeps teams mobile, and removes daily logistical challenges.

For sub pumps and dewatering running through the night, the difference is significant. Instagrid operates silently and produces no local emissions, meeting the environmental constraints of a site bordered by residential properties. No engine noise. No complaints.

There is one further benefit that is easy to overlook. Without a generator running, teams can communicate clearly across the site without raising their voices. The operatives noticed it quickly: Instagrid moves with them, powers what they need, and stays out of the way.

A project that connects the dots

There is something fitting about the choice of Instagrid on this particular site. The Wallend substation exists to move clean energy more efficiently across the grid. The civils team building it has chosen to make the construction itself cleaner. The infrastructure being built and the tools being used to build it are pointing in the same direction.

Contractors like J Coffey are demonstrating that decarbonising a major infrastructure site does not require a redesign of the entire programme. It requires the right decisions at the point of use, applied consistently across the fleet.

The UK's clean energy infrastructure is under construction. The teams building it are already making it cleaner.
