Instagrid - Impact - Circularity - Instagrid

We aim to close the loop

We want to increase product circularity by 25% until 2025

We integrate the concept of circularity from the very beginning. Therefore, our product is designed in a very modular way without permanent fixation. This facilitates the repairability and recyclability of the portable battery.

Based on our lifecycle analysis we learned the environmental burden of each material and aim to use alternatives or recycled materials.

What is it about?

What is it about?

For Instagrid, circularity is important because reducing waste is key to conserving resources and reducing the overall environmental impact. By designing battery systems with circular principles, we create a more sustainable and resilient way of living and doing business. This not only benefits the environment but also the economy and society at large by promoting resource efficiency and reducing dependence on finite resources. To assess our products’ circularity, we've used the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI) tool developed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Granta Design. Through our recycling and dismantling study, we have learned that currently, 80.5% of our product is subject to material recycling and 10.3% to energetic recycling. The remaining 9% are subject to disposal. This is due to our modular design which avoids permanent fixation and facilitates recyclability. We also work together with national take-back schemes for batteries where customers can deposit their used systems for recycling.

What's next?

What's next?

In 2023, we are looking to increase our MCI by 10 %. We plan to further increase the share of recycled materials from 23% to 30%. We are also developing an end-of-life and second-life strategy to ensure that materials are used for as long as possible and get properly dismantled and recycled when no further use is possible.

What is it about?

What is it about?

Increasing the lifetime of our products has a positive impact on CO2 emissions along the product lifecycle (particularly during the use phase). We designed our product in a modular way that facilitates the dismantling and repairing of each component, enabling our customers to repair minor defects themselves. Major defects are handled by our great technical service team. Also, the modular design increases the ability to repair single modules rather than replacing the whole system.

What's next?

What's next?

In 2023 we want to increase repair rate to 90% of returned systems. Therefore we plan to increase the capacity of our technical service team and enable our business partners to do first level support.
